What is Waldorf?
Waldorf education is math, sciences, humanities, the arts and more. Applauded worldwide for more than 80 years, Waldorf aims to educate the whole child, igniting a lifelong love of learning. The rich Waldorf curriculum provides the complete range of subjects taught in most American schools, with the addition of foreign languages, music, movement, handwork, and performing arts. At each grade, learning is carefully tailored to the natural stages of child development.
Head, heart, and hands
Given the unique learning styles of each student, Waldorf schools offer a variety of ways to experience the subjects studied, through the senses as well as the mind. From first grade on, the use of languages, music, art and handwork supports students as they study math, science, and the humanities. It's all carefully woven together, connecting each subject to the others.
The Waldorf Teacher
Each class of students ideally stays with the same main lesson teacher from grades one through eight. Special subjects, such as languages or music are taught by experts in specific fields. The benefits of growing together with a main teacher are many: that teacher knows and understands each child's strengths and challenges and can address specific needs from year to year. Parents form a close partnership with the teacher, and students thrive in the cohesive and consistent support system.
Waldorf and electronic media
By delaying the regular use of television, video games and computers, children develop a strong foundation in using their own capacities and experiences for imagination, research and analytical and critical thinking.
Waldorf and religion
Waldorf schools nurture in children their natural reverence for the wonder and beauty of life, fostering respect for all religions and spiritual beliefs.
Is Waldorf similar to Montessori?
Yes and no. While the two are similar in that both methods respect the unique learning style of the individual student, they differ greatly in their philosophies of child development, methods of teaching, and curriculum structure.
