Third Grade

Learning to Meet the World with Capability and Courage

Your third grader is becoming more independent and increasingly curious about the world and their place in it. This growing sense of self can also bring moments of uncertainty or separation. Our third grade curriculum supports children through this pivotal stage of identity formation by grounding them in meaningful, hands-on work.

Through creation stories and purposeful, hands-on work—such as farming, gardening, cooking, measuring, telling time, building shelters, and weaving—students explore how humans meet life’s essential needs. These experiences help your child develop self-reliance, confidence, and a deeper connection to the world around them.

Outdoor Experiences

Third graders take their first annual overnight trip with their class to a local farm, which directly connects them to the curriculum.

“Sheep to Shawl” projects are an important part of the 3rd grade experience, and each class will have a unique project of this nature. In collaboration with the class teacher and the handwork program, students get a taste for the origins of food, fibers, and resources that make up our everyday items. They may forage for wild plants that can be used to dye the wool they sheared from a sheep on a farm field trip, then use that dyed wool for a class weaving project. They may harvest food in the fall on one trip, then return a few weeks later to help prepare the ground for winter. In the spring, they may return again to till the soil and prepare for the next planting–witnessing the concept of time (which they also study in third grade) in a multi-faceted and unique way.

Field trips at CLWS are not one-off experiences, but rather opportunities for rich and continued connections with our local growers and farmers, and a chance for students to learn more deeply.

Festivals and Events

Our students enjoy a lively calendar of festivals and events throughout the school year that celebrate the rhythm of the seasons, honor one another’s cultures and traditions, and strengthen our community.

  • How Learning a Musical Instrument Increases Brain Power

Studies show that when it comes to teaching kids, it’s music—not coding—that actually has long term transferable developmental, cognitive, and academic benefits. Beginning in third grade, all our students learn to play the cello, viola, or violin through our String Ensemble program.
