Grade 8 Math Benchmarks

By the end of the year, students can:

 

•Manage the four processes with negative numbers

• Create and interpret bar graphs, pie charts and grids
• Understand and apply the order of operations rules
• Solve basic algebraic equations
• Construct the five regular Platonic solids
• Fluidly practice mental math (hearing questions and doing the calculations without the aid of pencil and paper)
• Solve abstract and real world (word) problems
• Approximate and estimate

 

They will master the following Pre­Algebra skills:

 

• Make calculations involving fractions, decimals and percentages, including conversions
• Make calculations using powers and roots
• Solve proportion and ratio problems
• Solve problems using basic formulae
• Solve equations and inequalities using the associative, commutative and distributive laws of algebra
• Calculate percentages
• Make and interpret graphs on the coordinate plane
• Calculate mean, median, mode and range
• Work with ratios and proportions

 

They will master the following Algebra I skills:

 

• Translate sentences into equations and vice versa
• Solving systems of equations and inequalities (one and two variables)
• Use number lines
• Calculate absolute value
• Do calculations involving the four processes and polynomials and rational expressions
• Solve equations and inequalities using the associative, commutative and distributive laws of algebra
• Calculate slope and graph linear equations and inequalities
• Calculate the volumes of blocks, pyramids, prisms, cylinders and cones
• Be familiar with the quadratic equation
• Convert between regular and scientific notation
