Meet our Educational Support Tutors

Educational Support is pleased to coordinate on-site tutoring as one if it’s many support services for students. We can arrange Math and Language Arts Tutoring, as well as various supplemental therapies.

We are grateful for our returning independent Language Arts tutors Nordis Heyerdahl and Chris McEnery, and are pleased to welcome three additional independent tutors; Xena Huff, Martha Mathis, and Dan Holtey. Below are biographies of the tutors. Xena Huff brings a vast array of skills and experience and has worked with students of all ages over the last two decades in both school and home settings. Currently, Xena sees students from around the metro area a a Learning Specialist and Tutor, providing support across all content areas, including math, process skills writing, organizational skills, social support, and general life support. Xena earned her BA and M.A. from Brown University.

Martha Mathis
has been a part of the City of Lakes Waldorf school staff for the past two years serving in early childhood, after care, and administrative support capacities. Martha came to Waldorf with a background of teaching K-12 special education in the public sector. She has completed a Waldorf grades teacher training and is in the process of finishing up an Educational Support training program. Martha has a passion for working with children of all ages and is excited to add the role of math tutor to her duties at City of Lakes Waldorf School.

Dan Holtey has tutored math in both middle and high school levels with students from St. Paul Academy, Blake, and City of Lakes Waldorf School. Dan was highly recommended by his former Waldorf families, who have worked with him for several years. Dan’s experience in education includes curriculum development, instruction, student evaluation, and tutoring. Currently, Dan’s work includes ABE/ALC Teacher in Bloomington, where he has also trained with Skills Tutor, an education program for tutoring.

Nordis Heyerdahl joined City of Lakes Waldorf School in 2011 as an independent reading tutor. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English, Spanish, and Education from Luther College, a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate from Hamline University, and certificates in Levels 1 and 2 of the Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Method for teaching reading and spelling from Orton-Gillingham of Minnesota. She enjoys working with children at City of Lakes Waldorf School where they are immersed in the rich language environment of story and song, and she is gratified by the wonderful progress that children who struggle with reading acquisition can make when given one-on-one tutoring sessions designed for their individual needs.

Chris McEnery joined City of Lakes Waldorf School as an independent reading tutor in 2014. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She also holds certificates in Levels 1 and 2 of the Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Method for teaching reading and spelling from Orton-Gillingham of Minnesota. She has always had a passion for literacy, spelling, writing and grammar, and enjoys working at City of Lakes Waldorf School helping children who need a little extra support build these skills using the individualized Orton-Gillingham approach.
